Welcome back to the SithVamp Christmas Extravaganza! The Silent Night Deadly Night series: it’s probably the most famous series of horror movies related to Christmas. The most famous entry is probably Silent Night Deadly Night 2 for the infamous “GARBAGE DAY!!!” scene. But that’s not the movie I’ll be taking a look at today. No, I’ll be taking a look at the entry in the Silent Night Deadly Night series that not so many people saw: Silent Night Deadly Night 5: the Toymaker.

Silent Night Deadly Night 5 came out in 1991. The movie opens in a family house, where the kid, Derek is awake. He hears his mom moaning, so he opens the door and sees that his parents are having sex. Then Derek goes downstairs, opens the front door and sees a gift box for him. He starts unwrapping the box, but suddenly his dad shows up and tells him to go to bed. Derek goes upstairs, but starts watching what his dad is doing. Dad sees that the box is moving, so he opens it. It’s a Santa ball, which starts playing music. The music starts out as Jingle Bells, but then it switches to the Funeral March. The Santa Ball then comes to life, attacks Derek’s dad then starts strangling him with his tentacles. Dad tries to break free, but he gets killed by a fire iron driven into his head. What makes this more dramatic is that Derek is there, witnessing all of this.

After the opening credits, which look very similar to the opening credit sequences of the Puppet Master and Demonic Toys movies, we see the house again. Here, Derek’s mom Sarah is still depressed about losing her husband. We also see that Derek still has the killer Santa ball. We find out that Derek got so traumatized by his dad’s death that he stopped speaking. Sarah decides that she’ll help Derek feel better by buying a toy for him.

We then see Sarah and Derek going to the store and here they meet the store’s owner, an old man named Joe Petto, played by the late Mickey Rooney, and his rebellious teenage son, Pino. Wait… Petto and Pino… who do those names remind you of? Yeah, I too think they’re referencing Beauty and the Beast :). Anyway, Sarah says that she wants to buy a present for Derek, so Mr. Petto takes Derek and Sarah to look around the store, while Pino is eerily watching them.

While Mr. Petto is showing toys to Derek, suddenly a man named Noah slowly enters and starts watching Sarah and Derek. Then Pino comes out of the backroom and gives Derek a scary-looking worm toy. Seeing that Derek doesn’t like any of the toys, Sarah leaves with Derek and then Mr. Petto starts yelling at Pino, while moving sinisterly towards him. Pino goes backwards, when he bumps into Noah. Pino then leaves and watches Noah as he pays for some toy, and when Noah pulls his wallet out, a piece of old newspaper falls out of his pocket. When Noah leaves, Mr. Petto sees the piece of newspaper and picks it up.

Then we cut to Noah’s apartment, where his landlord knocks on the door and tells Noah that he got evicted, because he bounced his rent check. Noah tries to reason with him, but the Landlord is harsh and tells Noah to get out of the apartment at once. Then Noah offers the Landlord that he’ll give him a toy for Christmas if he lets him pay tomorrow. This makes the Landlord change his mind. Noah gives the Landlord the creepy-looking worm toy Pino tried to give Derek earlier, and then the Landlord gets in his car and leaves. On the way, the worm toy gets out of the box, and when the Landlord picks it up, it comes to life, attacks and kills the Landlord. The Landlord’s car then tips over and explodes.

We then see Noah again, who enters the toy store, which is now closed. Noah moves around with a flashlight and slowly enters the backroom. He then searches around Mr. Petto’s papers and finds a photo of Pino and a younger Mr. Petto. Suddenly Mr. Petto enters and Noah hides. Luckily for Noah, Mr. Petto just came down to drink some Whiskey. When Mr. Petto leaves, Noah discovers the door leading to the basement. He proceeds to go downstairs, but suddenly something grabs his leg. Noah struggles the escape, but luckily the thing lets his leg go. Noah then runs out of the store.

We then cut back to Sarah and Derek’s house. Sarah takes Derek to the mall to meet Santa Claus. While Sarah and Derek are away, Pino secretly sneaks inside their house and looks around. At the mall, we see that Noah is working as a mall Santa. Suddenly he sees Sarah and Derek, so he puts on his Santa suit and goes to the mall’s Santa display. While a bratty kid is telling him her Christmas wishes, Noah keeps his eyes on Derek. When it’s Derek’s turn, he doesn’t want to tell his Christmas wishes. Then Sarah wants to leave, but Noah doesn’t want to let Derek go. Then Sarah takes Derek out of Noah’s arms and the two leave. Noah watches them as they leave in their car. Back at the house, Pino is still snooping around: we see him checking Sarah’s stuff. Then Sarah and Derek arrive home. Derek goes inside, and Sarah’s neighbor Kim tells her that she saw Pino inside the house. Hearing this, Sarah quickly runs inside the house, looking for Derek. Luckily, Derek is okay. Then Pino bursts out of the closet and runs out of the house.

Sarah immediately goes to the toy store to complain to Mr. Petto. She tells him about Pino breaking into her house and threatens him that if it happens again, she’ll call the Police. Mr. Petto calms Sarah down and explains to Sarah that he and Pino used to live in the house before Sarah and her family moved in, but they (Mr. Petto and Pino) had to move out because of financial issues. Mr. Petto thinks that the reason why Pino snuck inside might be because he misses living in the house. Sarah understands Mr. Petto’s bad luck, but says that it doesn’t mean Pino has the right to break in her house whenever he feels like it. Mr. Petto promises it won’t happen again. When Sarah leaves, Mr. Petto tries to open the basement’s door, but Pino won’t come out.

At night Sarah gives Derek a present, but he refuses to open it. When Sarah leaves the room, because her friend Kim arrived, Derek grabs the gift box, sneaks outside so Sarah won’t see him and throws the gift box in the garbage. But then Kim’s son Lonnie finds the gift box in the garbage and takes it. Lonnie opens the box and sees that it’s a pair of rollerblades, so he puts them on. Meanwhile, back at the toy store, we see Mr. Petto chastising Pino. Pino tries to go down to the basement, but Mr. Petto stops him. Since he’s drunk on Whiskey, Mr. Petto gets in a fight with Pino and he ends up throwing him off the stairs. Pino falls down to the basement and Mr. Petto is horrified because he killed him.

Back at Sarah’s house, Sarah wants Derek to sleep in his own room. Derek is too scared to sleep there again. In the room, Derek sees the Santa ball toy that killed his dad falling off the shelf and switching on, but before it can kill him, Derek smashes the Santa ball with a baseball bat. Meanwhile, Lonnie puts on the rollerblades and goes to try them out, but suddenly, the rollerblades turn out to have jet engines, which activate and the rollerblades go out of control. Lonnie is screaming as the rollerblades spin him around then take him backwards until he gets hit by a car.

Lonnie ends up hospitalized and Sarah visits him and Kim in the hospital. There, Kim shows Sarah the rollerblades that almost killed Lonnie. Back at the house, the doorbell rings. Derek opens the door and sees that it’s Noah. He offers Derek a gift box, but then Derek’s babysitter Meredith shows up and tells Noah to go away. Noah says that he wants to talk to Sarah, but Meredith tells him that Sarah’s at work so Noah has to reach him there. Then we see Sarah going home from work. She enters the parking lot, when suddenly she hears a noise. She gets a little scared, so she starts walking faster. Then, when she wants to get in her car, she accidentally drops her keys in the sewer and here’s where Noah meets her. Sarah gets scared, so she runs for it, but Noah catches her and then, since she somehow recognizes him, they start making out. Later, the two have a chat and it turns out that Noah and Sarah used to date when they were younger. We also learn that Noah is Derek’s real father! Noah then tells Sarah that he wants to stay with her and Derek and promises her that he’ll be a good father to Derek.

We then cut back to the house again, where Meredith is reading Derek a bedtime story. When Derek falls asleep, Meredith exits the room and goes into Derek’s room. Here she meets her boyfriend, Buck. Then the two proceed to make love. As this is going on, we also see that Noah is also banging Sarah. But little do Meredith and Buck know that Mr. Joe Petto, dressed up in a Santa suit broke into the house!

Mr. Petto sees Meredith and Buck f***ing, so he opens his bag and puts some killer toys on the floor; toys like crawling toy soldiers, a toy dinosaur, a toy snake, a toy car with circle saws, a Superhero figure, etc. Then Meredith sees the toys and wonders where ‘d they come from. Then the toys come to life: first, they just crawl around the room, but then they attack Meredith and Buck! Derek is watching this, but then Mr. Petto sees him, puts him in a bag and kidnaps him! The toys kill Buck, but Meredith manages to escape, despite being shot multiple times by the toys.

Then, when Sarah and Noah are about to go back to Sarah’s home, Noah reveals that Mr. Petto used to kill kids in the past, because he went crazy after his pregnant wife died in a car accident; Noah thinks that Mr. Petto is now after Derek and that’s why he (Noah) has been watching Sarah and Derek. Then the two arrive home, where they meet a freaked out Meredith covered in blood. Meredith Sarah and Noah that Derek’s been kidnapped by Mr. Petto and that the toys are alive. Sarah then drives off to the toy store, and Noah tells Kim to take Meredith to the hospital and call the police, then he runs after Sarah.

Sarah arrives at the toy store, looking for Derek and Mr. Petto. The front door is closed, so Sarah has to go inside through the backdoor. Sarah enters the store and sees that Mr. Petto has an apartment in the backroom. Here is where Sarah also sees a picture of her and Derek, but Derek’s face is stabbed with a bloody knife. Meanwhile, Noah arrives at the store too and enters the basement. Here he gets attacked by a toy plane, but fends off the attack. Then Mr. Petto, who’s still dressed up in a Santa suit, appears, and sprays Noah in the eye with a squirt gun, causing Noah to collapse and he gets buried under some boxes.

Then Sarah grabs the knife stuck in the picture and goes down to the basement. She looks around and discovers a workshop full of masks and toys and big red bags in the middle. Here is where Sarah also finds out that Mr. Petto is an impostor: she finds Mr. Petto’s dead body in the workshop, when the fake Mr. Petto shows up, grabs Sarah and reveals himself to be Pino! Here’s when we learn that Pino is not human: he’s a robot built by Mr. Petto after he lost his real son. Pino then takes off the Santa suit (and we see that he has no genitalia) and reveals to Sarah that he killed Mr. Petto on purpose, because he abused him and that *HE* was the one who sent all those killer toys, because he wants to kill Derek and become Sarah’s son.

Then Pino proceeds to rape Sarah, (which is stupid, because we’ve seen earlier that he has no dick), while chanting “I can be your son! I can! I can! I can! and “I love you mommy! I love you mommy!! I LOVE YOU!!! I LOVE YOU!!!” That is, until Sarah sticks a screwdriver into Pino’s head, causing Pino to malfunction. Then it turns out that Pino keeps Derek in one of the red bags and then he starts stabbing the bags with the knife Sarah dropped earlier, hoping that he’ll kill Derek in the process. Sarah tries to cut a deal with Pino that he can be her son if he doesn’t kill Derek. But the crazy robot guy refuses and tries to stab Derek once more, but the kid jumps out of the bag, pounces on Pino and starts yelling for Sarah to help him.

Sarah takes Derek off Pino’s back, then Noah, who managed to crawl out of the rubble, bursts into the workshop and cuts off Pino’s arm with an axe. But since he somehow has superhuman strength, Pino tosses Noah around the room and is about to kill him with a hammer, when Sarah cuts him (Pino) in half. Pino then starts crawling towards Mr. Petto’s dead body until he seemingly goes offline.

But then Pino grabs Sarah’s leg, until she smashes his head with her foot, but Derek tells Sarah not to be scared, because Pino was only a toy. And the movie ends with Sarah, Derek and Noah leaving the basement, but before they do, Derek says once again: “It’s just a toy…”, then we see a creepy dummy laughing, then the credits start rolling.

And that’s Silent Night Deadly Night 5! What do I think of it? It’s… it’s alright. It’s not the best movie, but it’s not a piece of sh** either. I’ve always liked killer toy movies and this movie kind of reminded me of Puppet Master (especially Puppet Master 2) and Demonic Toys.

Good things:
- It’s a killer toy movie
- Mickey Rooney gives a pretty good performance as Mr. Petto.

Bad things:
- How the hell did Meredith survive all those gunshot wounds from the killer toys?!

Favorite character:
- Sarah
- Noah
- Sarah’s neighbor Kim
- Mr. Petto

Least favorite character:
- Pino

So overall, I think Silent Night Deadly Night 5 is an alright Holiday Horror movie. I’m giving it8 out of 10. See you next time on the SithVamp Christmas Extravaganza! Ho-ho-ho!
The SithVamp Christmas Extravanganza continues as I take a look at the most underrated entry in the Silent Night Deadly Night series: Silent Night Deadly Night 5: The Toymaker.
