Welcome to another episode of SithVamp Reviews. Well, July is over, so it’s time to conclude Girl Power Month too. We’re at the end of Girl Power Month, and so far we’ve seen:
- A muscular girl fighting a killer robot,
- A decent animated movie about the most famous DC Superheroine,
- An action comedy about a duo of badass cop ladies,
- The origin story of Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup
- And the adaptation of one of my favorite Roald Dahl stories
So how am I gonna wrap up Girl Power Month after all that, you may ask? Well, name me a cartoon series that is currently on TV and has great female protagonists. If you say Steven Universe, that’s a good guess, but it’s not the show I had in mind. Guess again. What’s the *OTHER* Girl Power cartoon series that’s on the air nowadays? Yep, that’s right: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. And I’m sure most of you are familiar with the series of movies the show spawned: Equestria Girls. I’m going to conclude Girl Power Month by reviewing the first entry in that series of movies: My Little Pony: Equestria Girls.

Equestria Girls came out in 2013. The movie opens in the Crystal Kingdom, where Twilight Sparkle and her friends, Spike, Applejack, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy going to attend Twilight’s first Princess Summit. Twilight is nervous, but the other Ponies tell her not to worry. Then we see Twilight entering the throne room, where she meets Princess Celestia, Luna and Cadance. Celestia suggests that Twilight and the Mane 5 should go to sleep.

That night, when Twilight is asleep, suddenly a thief sneaks into her room and steals her Crown: the Element of Magic! But the Thief trips over Spike’s tail. This makes Twilight wake up and she sees the Thief running away, so she runs after her. The Other Mane 5 wake up too, and they catch the Thief, but the Crown falls into a Magic Mirror. The Thief then goes into the Mirror too. Twilight and the others wonder who the Thief was and why did she want the Crown.

The next morning Celestia tells the Mane 6 that the Thief is called Sunset Shimmer and she used to be a student of Celestia’s. Sunset Shimmer stole the crown, because she got jealous of Twilight, when she became Celestia’s star student. Celestia, Luna and Cadance then take the Mane 6 back to the Mirror, where Sunset Shimmer made her escape. Luna says that the Mirror is actually a portal to another world, which only opens once in 30 Moons. The Princesses send Twilight on a Mission to go through the Mirror, find her Crown and stop Sunset Shimmer, otherwise the Elements of Harmony would become useless. The other Mane 5 wants to go too, but Celestia doesn’t allow them, because they would create confusion in the other World. Twilight goes through the Mirror, but Spike accidentally goes with her too.

After they go through the portal, Twilight and Spike wake up in the other world, and first Twilight sees that Spike turned into a dog. She’s even more shocked to discover that she’s no longer a Pony: she’s human! Twilight wonders where she is, but then she remembers her mission, so after she learns how to walk like a human, she and Spike go inside the High School, which Twilight believes to be a castle. This High School is Equestria High and Twilight looks around where Sunset Shimmer hid the Crown. Then the bell rings and Twilight gets surrounded by the students of the school, who are the human equivalents of the Ponies of Ponyville. As Twilight looks around the School, we hear a song about how strange this world is to Twilight.

Then Twilight hears a voice. She takes a look and sees that Sunset Shimmer is bullying a girl, who looks a lot like Fluttershy. Twilight doesn’t take this well, so she confronts Sunset, telling her to lay off the Fluttershy-looking girl. Instead of starting a fight, Sunset first says that she can talk to anyone the way she wants, then she walks off. The Fluttershy-looking girl thanks Twilight for standing up to her. Twilight introduces herself, and we learn that the Fluttershy-looking girl is indeed Fluttershy. Twilight says that she knows Sunset, and Fluttershy replies that the reason why Sunset picked on her is because she found the Crown, and she wanted to take it to Principal Celestia.

Twilight then runs off to find Principal Celestia. She enters the Principal’s office and asks Principal Celestia about the Crown. Principal Celestia says that she gave the Crown to Vice-Principal Luna to put it away, because the Crown is for the Princess of the School’s annual party: the Fall Formal. Twilight then sees pictures on the wall that show that Sunset Shimmer is crowned Princess every year at the Fall Formal. This gives Twilight an idea: she’ll run for Princess at the Fall Formal in order to get the Crown back.

Then, when it’s lunch break, we see Twilight in the Cafeteria with Fluttershy, and she asks her how she can run for Fall Formal Princess. Fluttershy is scared to hear this, because Sunset Shimmer doesn’t allow ANYONE to run. Fluttershy says Twilight must convince every student in Canterlot High to vote for her instead of Sunset.

After lunch, Twilight goes to the school gym, where the decorations for the Party are already prepared. Twilight comes here, because Fluttershy told her that the Head of the Party Planning Committee is there. The Head Party Planner turns out to be the Human version of Pinkie Pie. Twilight tells Pinkie that Fluttershy sent her, but Pinkie seems upset, when Twilight mentions Fluttershy’s name. However, Pinkie lets Twilight sign up for the Fall Formal. Then another girl enters the hall: the human version of Applejack, who, along with the human version of Big Macintosh, brings crates of cider for the party. Pinkie tells Applejack about Twilight wanting to run for Princess, but like Fluttershy, AJ too thinks this is a bad idea. (She even mentions that the only person less trustworthy than Sunset is Rainbow Dash)

Twilight then runs off, but then Sunset Shimmer enters, and she’s not impressed with Pinkie’s decorations. She’s even disgusted that Applejack brought cider, because it’s going to be “her Coronation, not a Hoedown”. Then Applejack and Pinkie tell Sunset that Twilight signed up for the Fall Formal too. As you can imagine, Sunset doesn’t take this well. Sunset then finds Twilight and asks her why did she follow her, when she doesn’t know a thing about this alternate world. Sunset then tells Twilight that she better not interfere with her plans, or she’ll humiliate her. Then Sunset tells her two cronies: Snips and Snails to follow Twilight and find something about her that would embarrass her in front of every student.

Since she lacks experience in this alternate world, Twilight and Spike decide to go to the library to do some research, but Snips and Snails follow her and they film her on their phones, while she’s trying to figure out how a computer works. Not only that, but they also film how Twilight is acting awkwardly in the library. And at night, since they have nowhere to go in the alternate world, Twilight and Spike make a bed out of books and decide to sleep in the library. But before she does, Twilight finds a yearbook and sees a group photo of the Human Mane 5. Twilight wonders, because on the photo, the Mane 5 look like they’re friends, but when she met them, they talked about each other like they were enemies. Twilight wonders what pitted the Human Mane 5 against each other.

The next day Twilight decides to make a good first impression with the other students, but finds that everyone is laughing at her. Suddenly Human Rarity drags Twilight and Spike inside a classroom and puts a disguise on them. Then Applejack, Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie enter the room and show Twilight the reason why everyone was laughing at her: Sunset Shimmer uploaded the embarrassing video Snips and Snails made of Twilight to YouTube or whatever video site this world has. Sunset made this video to stop Twilight from running for Fall Formal Princess. Embarrassed, Twilight thinks that no one will vote for her now that they’ve seen Sunset’s video.

However, Pinkie, Fluttershy, Rarity and Applejack offer to help Twilight. Unfortunately this turns into an argument among the former friends, and they bicker until Twilight breaks them up. Twilight then shows the others the group photo in the old yearbook she found. AJ, Pinkie, Rarity and Fluttershy remember that they used to be friends, and Twilight thinks Sunset Shimmer had something to do with them turning against each other. We learn that Sunset Shimmer has been spreading lies among the Mane 5 and that’s how she pitted them against each other. The Mane 4 decide to apologize to each other, and to Rainbow Dash.

We then finally see the human version of the 5th Mane Pony: Rainbow Dash, who’s playing soccer. Twilight, Rarity, Fluttershy and Pinkie watch from the distance as Applejack and Dash apologize to each other and hug. Then Rainbow Dash goes to Twilight and offers to help her if she beats in soccer. As you can imagine, Dash wins the game, but offers to help Twilight anyway, because she thinks that Twilight has heart and determination and that’s what makes someone qualified for a Fall Formal Princess.

Then we see Twilight and the Mane 5 sitting in a Café, where they plan how to get everyone in Canterlot High to vote for Twilight instead of Sunset Shimmer. Then Rarity has an idea: she says that she and the others should use the uniforms of the Canterlot High Cheer Team: the Wondercolts to promote Twilight.

And then we see the Mane 6 put their plan into action: in the Cafeteria, they put on their Wondercolt uniforms and start singing a musical number: “Helping Twilight Win the Crown”, which wins over every student in Canterlot High (except for Sunset Shimmer, Snips and Snails of course). Sunset Shimmer is not happy that Twilight is stealing her voters, so she has another plan to sabotage Twilight…

Then we see Sunset taking Vice-Principal Luna to show her that someone wrecked the ballroom, and she blames Twilight for it. However, one of the students, Flash Sentry sees this and runs to tell Principal Celestia. We then see Twilight in Vice-Principal Luna’s office, who shows some obviously Photoshopped photos of Twilight wrecking the ballroom. Luna wants to disqualify Twilight, but it turns out that the photos are fake indeed, because Flash Sentry enters with some other photos with Twilight’s picture cut out. In the end, Luna doesn’t disqualify Twilight, but due to the damage done in the ballroom, they postpone the Fall Formal. Flash then asks Twilight out to go to the Fall Formal with him. Since the Fall Formal is postponed to the next day, Twilight gets nervous, turns down Flash’s offer, and runs off.

The reason why Twilight is nervous, because if she doesn’t get the Crown back that night, she won’t be able to leave the Alternate World for another 30 moons. Spike suggests that she and Twilight should tell the others the Truth. Actually, Pinkie reveals the truth about Twilight, but the others aren’t shocked by this. Twilight then tells the Mane 5 that the Fall Formal must happen that night or she won’t be able to go back to Equestria. The Mane 5 agree to help. Then we see Twilight and the others clean up the ballroom and fix what Sunset Shimmer ruined, while a musical number is playing. All the other students join in the redecorating too. Because the damage has been fixed, Principal Celestia puts the Fall Formal back to its original date. Oh, and there’s also Flash Sentry asking Twilight to dance with him, and this time she accepts.

And that night we finally see the big event: the Fall Formal. We see the whole school dancing, until Principal Celestia announces the Fall Formal Princess: Twilight. Everyone is happy that Twilight won, but suddenly Twilight sees Snips and Snails kidnapping Spike. Twilight and the Mane 5 run after Snips and Snails, who lead them outside.

Outside, Snips and Snails let Spike go. Twilight and the Mane 5 find Sunset Shimmer, who’s standing in front of the portal with a huge hammer, and she threatens Twilight to hand over the Crown or she’ll smash the portal. Twilight won’t give Sunset the Crown, saying that Equestria will survive without her Element, and she won’t let Sunset destroy this Alternate World. Sunset drops the hammer.

However, Sunset is sick of the Mane 5 praising Twilight for how great she is, so she tackles Twilight, knocking the Crown off her head. Unfortunately, after a game of hot potato, Sunset is the one who gets hold of the Crown. She puts the Crown on her head and the Crown turns her into a Demon. Demon Sunset then turns Snips and Snails into demons too and all the students in Canterlot High into zombies. Demon Sunset then reveals to Twilight that her real plan is to take over Equestria with her Zombie Army. Demon Sunset thinks that now there is nothing Twilight can do to stop her, because she has the Crown of Magic.

Demon Sunset tries to strike down Twilight and the Mane 5, but a Magic Force Field protects them. This Magic Force Field is created by the Magic of the Crown and the Magic of Twilight and the Others’ Friendship. Then the Magic of Friendship makes Twilight and friends grow Pony Ears, Tails and Wings, and Twilight, just like other times, when she and the others defeat a big villain, says that Friendship is the most powerful kind of Magic. Twilight and the Mane 5 defeat Sunset Shimmer with the Rainbow Tornado that they used to defeat Nightmare Moon and Discord with, and then they release the students from Sunset’s spell.

Sunset then reverts back to her human form, and Twilight tells her that she can either choose to have friends or choose to forever be alone. Sunset feels remorse for being a jerk to everyone, and the Mane 5 offer to teach her how to be a good friend. Principal Luna then gives the Crown back to Twilight, and then the whole school go back to the ballroom to finish the Fall Formal.

And the movie ends with Twilight saying goodbye to the Human Mane 5, and going back to Equestria through the Portal. And she tells the Ponies about what happened to Sunset and what she saw in the alternate world.

And that’s Equestria Girls. What do I think of it? It’s pretty good.

Good things:
- The Ponies as humans

Bad things:
- The subplot with Twilight and Flash Sentry is kind of weak. I mean, I don’t hate Flash Sentry, I have nothing against the guy, but I do feel his character needs more development…

Favorite character:
- Fluttershy
- Twilight
- Rainbow Dash
- Pinkie Pie
- Rarity
- Applejack
- Sunset Shimmer
- Spike
- Snips and Snails
- Principal Celestia

Least favorite character:
- Nobody really

So overall, I think Equestria Girls is pretty good. I’m giving it 9 out of 10. This is the end of Girl Power Month. Maybe someday I’ll do it again… See you next time on SithVamp Reviews!

One of the only good development of Flash Sentry in the first movie was his suspicions of Sunset Shimmer claiming Twilight destroyed the decorations at the Fall Formal, and he helped proved Twilight innocent. This does make him a real wondercolt to me but I guess it's just me.
